How To Include Volunteer Experience In Your Resume

Our professional identity is not only about what we do during work hours. In fact more employers are now considering candidates with volunteer experience which shows them you are willing to get involved in your community, give back, take the initiative and make things happen!

How To Include Volunteer Experience In Your Resume 1

When should you include volunteer experience on your resume?

Always and take special care to emphasise it on your resume if you are:

  • Fresh Graduate: As a fresh grad you probably don’t have enough or any paid experience to write on your resume. Make your volunteer experience central and elaborate to make up for the paid experience.
  • Career Change: This is the best way to get a job in a new industry, by showing you have been a part of it for years.
  • Returning: If you have had a career gap, listing your volunteer experience on your resume is a great way to show that you have actively spent time developing new skills.

How should you list the volunteer experience?

This will depend on how that experience is related to your career targets.

If the volunteer experience is directly related to your career, than list it with a separate heading so it stands out, right under the job.

If the volunteer experience was generic, charity work for example, than you can list all your volunteer experiences right after the experience section.
