Do You Have An Elevator Pitch?

An elevator pitch is a quick summary of your background and experience. he reason it's called an elevator pitch is that you should be able to present it during a brief elevator ride. Done right, this short speech helps you introduce yourself to career and business connections in a compelling way.

What's in an elevator pitch?

This speech is all about you: who you are, what you do, and what you want to do (if you’re job hunting). Your elevator pitch is a way to share your expertise and credentials quickly and effectively with people who don’t know you.

When to use the elevator pitch?

You can use your elevator pitch during career fairs, networking events and even online in your profile summary. It is a great way to gain confidence in introducing yourself to hiring managers and company representatives. You can also use your elevator pitch to answer the “Tell me about yourself‘ question during a job interview.

Keep it simple

Restrict the speech to 30-60 seconds — that’s the time it takes to ride an elevator, hence the name. You don’t need to include your entire work history and career objectives. Your pitch should be a short recap of who you are and what you do.

Be flexible

Since this is an introduction and not a full interview,  you want to appear open-minded and flexible.

Mention your goals

Do mention your goals while keeping your pitch generic since it will be used in many circumstances, and with many different types of people. But do remember to say what you’re looking for.

Have a business card ready

It is a good idea to have a professional ‘personal‘ business card handy. A personal business card is personal, no need to mention anything related to your employer (if you are employed). Just having your full name, personal email address & mobile numbers is more than enough. You can also add personalization to the card by adding your own design & colors that reflect your personality.

Practice, practice, practice

The best way to feel comfortable about giving an elevator speech is to practice it until the speed and “pitch” come naturally, without sounding robotic. You will get used to varying the conversation as you practice doing so. The more you practice, the easier it will be to deliver it when you’re at a career networking event or job interview.

READY FOR YOUR NEXT INTERVIEW?

Job interviews can be nerve wrecking. You don’t know who you are going to meet and what questions are going to be asked. Plus you only get ONE chance.

Elevator Pitch Examples

I recently graduated from college with a degree in communications. I worked on the college newspaper as a reporter, and eventually, as the editor of the arts section. I’m looking for a job that will put my skills as a journalist to work.

I have a decade’s worth of experience in accounting, working primarily with small and midsize firms. If your company is ever in need of an extra set of hands, I’d be thrilled to consult.

My name is Mariam, and after years of working at other PR agencies, I’m taking the plunge and opening my own office. If you know anyone who’s looking for a new PR professional, I hope you’ll send them my way!

I create illustrations for websites and brands. My passion is coming up with creative ways to express a message, and drawing illustrations that people share on social media.

My name is Sara, and I run a fast food restaurant. It’s a family-owned business, and we think the personal touch makes a big difference to our customers. Not only do we guarantee quality, but my father and I are hands-on during peak service.
